Hail Lucius of the Longthorpe Legion!

The Romans are marching all the way from Peterborough to join us for the first time in the Living History area on School Lane Meadow for 22 & 23 March 2025.

They have generously been given permission to leave the Roman fort at Longthorpe for the weekend, giving them a break from their vital duties guarding the Nene river crossing.

Hear about the 9th Legion Hispana who were tasked with moving up the eastern side of Britain, including the South Cambridge area, improving and building roads, building forts, towns, mansios, amphitheatres, forums and villas as they went. Experience how Romano-Britain civilians lived and hear about the changes the Romans made in lifestyle, habits, dress, religion farming and trade.

There will be lots of interesting things to see, so do come and have a chat with Lucius and his legion who are looking forward to greeting you.

And if you love Roman history, why not speak to Lucius about joining the group?

We’ve been looking into the history of Romans around the Thriplow & Heathfield Parish. Local finds include pottery fragments, a Quern stone, hypocaust tile, tegulae, and tesserae. We have evidence of a Roman farmstead, enclosure, villa, barrows and crop marks, all close to the ends of the Hoffer Brook which leads direct into the parish.

The Militias of Anglia will be encamped in School Lane Meadow

Our regulars, The Militias of Anglia, who are coming back to Thriplow over Daffodil Weekend for another year of historical reenactment. Check out their encampment in School Lane Meadow at DW, 22 & 23 March.

And this year they are featuring some new superbly yucky fun for the kids (and the big kids):

Splat the plague rat
Hook a turd from the pond
Snot in the pot
Pillory sponge throwing (Roundheads and Cavaliers)
What’s in the box?
Hands in holes – eewwwuukk
And a quiz

*Cromwell’s New Model Army camped at Thriplow (Triploe) Heath back in 1647 and their encampment would have been very like that of the Militias of Anglia at Daffodil Weekend.

Our Convoy4Ukraine drivers are back. Here’s their report.

Driving from Thriplow to Ukraine as part of an aid convoy was an unforgettable experience. Our truck, a sturdy green vehicle bought with funds from Daffodil Weekend and affectionately named “Shrek” because it was big, green, and ugly, was packed with nappies, blankets, and other vital humanitarian supplies. Alongside 11 other trucks, we covered 1,300 miles across Europe in just four days.

Three members of Daffodil Weekend—Alastair, Fergus, and Paul—took part, joining the convoy, which was brilliantly organised by Convoy4Ukraine. It wasn’t all smooth sailing—we faced breakdowns along the way, with mechanics working through the night to keep us moving. But the camaraderie was incredible, and everyone we met along the journey was friendly and supportive.

We felt apprehensive approaching the border, but the warmth and gratitude of the Ukrainian people was overwhelming. They were so thankful for the aid, which was deeply humbling to witness. Given the political situation, the help is needed more than ever. Seeing firsthand the good that the money raised by Daffodil Weekend does made me incredibly proud to have taken part. All 12 trucks were donated to Ukraine, and the drivers flew home, knowing they had made a real difference.

Image: Misspent Youth - the only Thriplow rock and roll band!

The original 3 piece band was formed in Thriplow in the early 90s (before Matt was born!). We had all been in bands in our teens and Nick from Newmarket was a holiday camp resident drummer. Matt occasionally played drums with the band from the age of 10 but now enjoys guitar and keyboards. We all had original 60s equipment from our teens so our music style is late 50s and 60s rock and roll. Our set list includes songs from the Beatles, Stones, Shadows, Small Faces and more.
